The Street Pastor's training course is over 12 Saturdays (not altogether) and includes subjects such as counselling skills, drugs awareness, sociology, knowing your community, role and responsibility, and street safety. Sutton Street Pastors go out on the streets of Sutton every Friday and Saturday night from 9-4pm and have been operating since Dec 200 All Street Pastors go through 12 Saturdays of training over 6 months. A typical night includes giving out spikeys, flipflops, lollipops, helping those in distress, signposting people to relevant services, being a visible presence, being a listening ear and where appropriate praying with people and answering any spiritual questions they may have.
Before they can go out, every Street Pastor has to go through extensive 12 week training course in areas such as counseling, drug awareness, evangelism, working with statutory agencies and much more. The initiative has the full backing of the Metropolitan Police and the Local Safer Neighbourhoods Team. In Sutton, the police have even provided a sum of money to subsidise the training, and more recently provided a grant to salary a part-time coordinator. VideosOn Friday 17th December 2005, the first group of Sutton's Street Pastors took to the streets on an icy cold night. "It was wonderful to see so many people greeting them and engaging with them - and in some cases actually hugging them" (K Ahronson) This four-minute video captures the mood of the night - as the church leaves the comfort of its pews and meets with the community.Watch the video (broadband only) Dec 2005
