Street Pastors are a growing phenomenon throughout the UK - ordinary Christians with a passion to go out onto the streets and help those who need it. Street Pastors is an initiative aimed at reducing crime, anti-social behaviour and to demonstrate the love of God through his Church on the streets in a very practical way. Working through the night, they go out in groups, meeting and talking with the homeless, and those living on the edge of society. Sutton now has it's own team of Street Pastors with Christians from North Cheam Community Church, All Saints Hackbridge, St Helier Community Church and Sutton Christian Centre. They have also been joined by four people from Kings Church in Epsom - and numbers are expected to grow.
The initiative has the full backing of the Metropolitan Police and the Local Safer Neighbourhoods Team. In Sutton, the police have even provided a sum of money to subsidise the training, and more recently provided a grant to salary a part-time coordinator. VideosOn Friday 17th December 2005, the first group of Sutton's Street Pastors took to the streets on an icy cold night. "It was wonderful to see so many people greeting them and engaging with them - and in some cases actually hugging them" (K Ahronson) This four-minute video captures the mood of the night - as the church leaves the comfort of its pews and meets with the community.Watch the video (broadband only) Dec 2005
